1.
1773: Phyllis Wheatley, a Boston slave, becomes
the first African-American to publish a work
2.
March 2, 1807: President Jefferson passes a law forbidding
Americans to participate in the slave trade
4. December 6, 1865: the 13th Amendment to the U.S.
Constitution is ratifiedThe 13th Amendment declares: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a
punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place
subject to their jurisdiction.”
5.
1895: W.E.B. Du Bois becomes the first African-American
student at Harvard to receive a Ph.D. (which he earns in History)
6. February 12, 1909: the National Association for the Advancement
of Colored People (NAACP) is founded in New York City by Ida B. Wells-Barnett, W.E.B. Du Bois, Mary White Ovington, and Henry
Moskowitz

July, 1944: Irene Morgan, a mother of two, refuses
to give up her seat on a Greyhound bus in Virginia bound for BaltimoreTwo years later, the Supreme
Court rules in
Irene Morgan vs.
Virginia that segregation
in interstate travel is unconstitutional.

May 17, 1954: the Supreme Court rules 9-0 in Brown v.
Board of Education that school
segregation is unconstitutionalThis ruling dismisses the 1896 Supreme Court “separate but equal” ruling. Certain
states are slow to enforce this ruling.

August 29, 1957: the United States Congress passes the
Civil Rights Act of 1957: This
was the first act of Civil Rights legislation since Reconstruction in America.The act helps to
protect every U.S. citizen’s right to vote and establishes a Civil Rights Commission whose duty is to investigate acts
of discrimination and injustice. The Act also led to the creation of a Civil Rights Division within the Department of Justice.

August 23, 1963: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivers
his famous “I
have a dream” speech at the March
on Washington for Jobs and Freedom
11. 1993: Carol Moseley Braun becomes the first African-American woman to be elected
to the U.S. Senate
12.
November 4, 2008: Barack Obama is elected the 44th President
of the United States, and the first African-American President of the United States

STOP throwing away money! Recycle rewards turn points into money for the Scholarship
Fund. Please bring in all your Oreo & Chip Ahoy cookie bags along with Capri Sun pouches in addition to ink cartridges,
old cell phones and Campbell Soup lables. There will be a container in the fellowship hall to collect this items.
Also as part of our Community Rewards Program, when you shop at Gordon Food Store, it generates a
rebate to our Scholarship Fund. To further the Gordon Food Service Reward Program please
see the scholarship committee if you have not signed up for GFS Savings and Coupon Card. Your
efforts will support our High School Seniors and College Students.
